How the French flashcard maker works
Paste a list of French words (or upload a .csv), one per line, and press Create flashcards. Each card shows the English meaning and asks you to spell the French β type your answer and press Enter (or hit Reveal) to see the word, hear it pronounced, and get instant feedback. Then swipe to the next card. Everything runs in your browser and your list is kept only on your device.
About the meanings & gender
Common words are matched against a built-in dictionary, so their English meaning and gender (le/la) are accurate and instant. Less common words fall back to a free online translator β treat those as a helpful guide rather than a dictionary, since machine translation can miss context, and any gender it canβt confirm is estimated from the word ending (shown in grey with a β?β). For exact meanings you can always type your own English after a word (for example canard, duck).
Meanings and genders for common words come from Wiktionary (via kaikki.org) and Lexique, used under CC BY-SA.
Frequently asked questions
Is my word list uploaded anywhere?
No. Your list is processed in your own browser and stored locally on your device. Only the individual words are sent to the translation service to fetch a meaning.
How many words can I add?
You can add hundreds at once. Very large lists take longer because each word is translated individually, and the free translation service has daily limits β if translations stop, try again later or add your own English.
Can I practise spelling?
Yes β spelling is built into every card. You type the French word from its English meaning (and can hear it first). We tell you if youβre correct, and flag when only the accents are off, then reveal the word.
How is the le/la decided?
Common words use a built-in dictionary, so their gender is accurate. For rarer words not in the dictionary, gender is estimated from the wordβs ending (shown in grey with a β?β) β right most of the time but not always. Include the article yourself (e.g. la table) for guaranteed accuracy.
